Trends in disruptive technologies, energy technologies, project management, organizational management, among others, allow us to examine the potential of technology management to foster sustainable societies (Diniz et al., 2023; Patnaik et al., 2018). Specifically, these trends invite to explore how technological innovations and management practices can address contemporary challenges across the five dimensions of sustainability, including: environmental (Liu, 2023), economic (Ahmadi et al., 2023), societal (Spinazzola, 2022), and health (Tonjang et al., 2024). The core objective is to examine how technological advancements, when combined with effective management strategies, can address complex sustainability challenges (Grama-Vigourux et al., 2024). It is necessary to foster a critical examination of design, implementation, and governance of technological innovations that prioritize environmental conservation, resource efficiency, and climate change resilience. Moreover, sustainable societies require to emphasize the integration of sustainable practices into engineering management processes, ensuring that projects and initiatives align with long-term environmental and societal objectives, when a competitive society is also required, in an era where AI has become a common tool.
This reality requires emphasizing the critical impact of AI on business practices and society (Gurjar et al., 2024; Kaushal et al., 2024). In recent years, AI has significantly transformed business and management processes, reshaping industries such as manufacturing, engineering, and software development. As organizations increasingly embrace AI-driven solutions, they face the challenge of navigating the complex opportunities and risks associated with this technological evolution (Brem et al., 2023). The world needs to examine how organizations can harness AI to enhance competitiveness in today’s dynamic landscape, inviting discussion on leveraging AI’s potential to optimize operations, improve decision-making, and foster innovation. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of understanding AI’s societal implications, including ethical considerations (Nitta et al., 2022), equity (Chen, 2020), and the future of work (Banafa, 2024).
We call for high-quality research studies from academia, industry, governments, and non-profits, especially collaborations among these groups, to address important findings to current discussions on technology management and its societal implications. As we transition away from the COVID-19 pandemic, effective management of digital technologies is crucial for organizations to navigate the complexities of modern business. At the same time, discussions on technology management are more relevant than ever, reflecting the critical role of digital technologies in shaping societies and economies (Cetindamar et al., 2023).
